NexGard Flea and Tick Treatment for Dogs
Fleas and ticks are a problem that is notoriously difficult to eradicate in dogs and tends to recur even when you think you have gotten rid of the pests.
NexGard is a tasty, soft chew which is designed to kill fleas and ticks in dogs. NexGard chewables for large dogs are also available for bigger dogs that need a stronger dose of flea and tick control.
How Does NexGard Flea and Tick Treatment For Dogs Work?
The NexGard formulation contains afoxolaner, a substance which treats pest problems by killing live fleas and ticks. Fleas are killed before they have a chance to lay eggs, which stops them from proliferating on your pet and in your home.
The afoxolaner formulation contained in NexGard kills fleas and ticks for a period of 30 days. Fleas and ticks’ nervous systems go into overdrive thanks to the afoxolaner, and this subsequently causes them to die.
When Does NexGard Flea and Tick Treatment Start Working?
Once NexGard is ingested, it typically takes only 2 to 6 hours to start working at its peak.
NexGard is very quickly absorbed into the dog’s blood stream and can be taken with food or on an empty stomach, regardless of the dog’s breed or how old it is.
Simply choose the NexGard flea and tick treatment product that is appropriate to your dog’s size. All NexGard products when correctly chosen will be absorbed and metabolised by dogs’ bodies in the same manner.
NexGard typically kills 99% of the fleas on your pet within a period of 24 hours. As the fleas and ticks die, they move to the top of your dog’s fur coat and can then be removed with ease.
How Long Do the Effects of NexGard Flea and Tick Treatment last?
NexGard will work for a period of 30 days from the time of consumption. Hence, do not use it more than once a month.
Is NexGard Waterproof?

If your dog is pregnant, lactating or breeding, your veterinarian can advise you as to whether the product can safely be used. Please note that NexGard is to be used only on dogs and not cats or other animals.

In Australia, no prescription is needed for the use of NexGard.
Why is NexGard Ideal for Australian Pets?
Australian pets tend to be an active bunch that enjoy frolicking outdoors. Thanks to Australia’s perennially sunny weather, taking your dog for a romp outdoors or watching him sunbathe on the lawn is an absolute pleasure.
Unfortunately, spending all that time outdoors also makes dogs a magnet for fleas and ticks. Fleas often proliferate in the grass, so once a dog gets them it is very difficult to get rid of them. Flea collars and shampoos are not as effective as a treatment like NexGard, as they are powerless against repeated exposure to flea-infested environments.
Ticks are also a big problem in Australia, where more than 70 different species proliferating. Some ticks, like the paralysis tick, can be very dangerous, and diseases and anaemia are often caused by these pests.
Considering the risks, it is important to make sure you monitor your pet regularly for fleas and ticks, and administer a treatment that works. Dealing with the problem promptly is key—for instance, the paralysis tick typically needs to be on your dog for at least three days before the toxin can affect the animal.
As such, regular use of a product like NexGard can not only rid your dog of the annoyance and discomfort of having fleas and ticks, but might also save him from a potentially life-threatening situation.
